Footwear brand, Hush Puppies, teamed up with SHOUT SA for its CSI campaign ‘Shout Out To the Decades’ which involved raising funds that would go towards building a SHOUT library in one of South Africa’s underprivileged areas.
Some of our most well-known South African celebrities supported the cause and visited Yiull Damaso Studio in Craighall Park to design their own pair of Hush Puppies in an effort to raise funds. These funds would be used to build another SHOUT SA library, making it possible for underprivileged youth to have access to reading materials. Being able to read inspires our youth, feeding their minds and imaginations.
Due to the high levels of illiteracy in South Africa, SHOUT’s focus remains on improving this through providing communities with the tools the youth need to learn and succeed. By reaching young children and encouraging them to get educated and work hard, they will be better equipped to succeed as adults. This is where the libraries come in!
Among the personalities who took part were Pearl Thusi, Boity, Anatii, Euphonik, Gil Oved, Kabelo Mabalane, Gail Mabalane, Danny K, Yiull Damaso, Tebello ‘Tibs’, Loyiso Bala and various media and influencers.
The content and drive created on the day was used to create a limited edition calendar for 2019 that went on sale mid-September, and proceeds from the calendar sales went towards building a SHOUT library.
In April 2021 the library was opened – very exciting! The community of Diepsloot is now home to its very own SHOUT library thanks to Hush Puppies. This is the 13th SHOUT library in South Africa, and certainly not the last.
